Audio and video today are data

New technologies for the broadcast industry have forced to change the way of thinking and making audio and video.

Magnum celebrates 39 years in the market, in which they have evolved from offering only audio products to streaming. The company offers everything from a microphone or converter, to complete remote production solutions, television studios and equipment rental. In addition, they are a Yamaha-authorized service center and comprehensive technical support for all the brands they distribute.

There is another branch of the company that is dedicated to making acoustic conditioning. They have around 25 brands, which complement each other. These include LiveU, AWS, Labo, VSN, Brainstorm, Sodyo and Streamm.

"Nothing is audio anymore, nothing is video, they are all data and that is precisely what we specialize in today: cloud solutions, OTT, video over IP streams, and that has helped us a lot to understand the evolution of the market both here and in the world. What was a microwave transmission or the way the mobile units were assembled is changing and we will see a very big change in the way of working. It is an evolution that we have had in the last 8 years," David Camacho, sales manager of Magnum, told TVyVideo+Radio.

An accelerated evolution
The magnum representative stressed that although before there was a very slow change in technologies in Mexico and Latin America compared to the United States and Europe, today access to the cloud and the internet has allowed it to be faster.

"But there are cases like artificial intelligence engines that are being adopted by both users in the United States and Mexico. The automation of processes becomes fundamental because there are fewer and fewer personnel available. Although we are already prepared with teams to work with 5G as with LiveU, we know that perhaps here it will take a little longer to deploy the technology, it adapts a little slower, but the search for broadcasters is massified, they must seek to cover the gaps that have left to have little staff, "he said.

He added that the new generators of independent content such as Youtubers, bloggers, are molded in a single industry and that allows to cover other types of technologies and other types of markets. It is one more change, with developments such as the cloud that forces us to change the way we think and do things.

"We can no longer think of the same workflow, everything in SDI, everything in copper, with an encoder and a decoder, with this comes a very big change for engineers and for those who offer solutions, that we must adapt very quickly to those types of technologies that have shown how economical it can be to build a channel in the cloud and the number of engines we can involve. It is a necessary change," he said.

To conclude this topic, David Camacho pointed out that the adoption of technologies includes a process of evangelization, in which they must first be understood in order to deploy them. "Users are learning, new technologies are being developed, flows based on these technologies require changing the irons they already had. That is why solutions such as the cloud will be implemented in the medium term, because it seems that it is very complicated."

Trending
Some of the trends he highlighted as important for the industry in the medium term are:
- Remote production will be a very important change. Knowing a different way to put together the mobile units, the way of transmission, the number of people who see an event now.
- 5G, if it is deployed as the theory says, it will be very interesting what we will be able to do. If today there is already a lot of content on a phone, with a 5G network we can do much more
- Audio over IP. Although it is a technology that has been around for a long time, today the ease of sharing resources between studios of a broadcaster, using a single central brain is very important.
- The cloud, covering as wide as you want. From storage, transmission, artificial intelligence, it is increasingly deploying more and more services.
