The audiovisual short called La Mesías, presented by the student of the Central University of Bogotá Edwin Alexander Gacha, was the winner of the 2019 version of the TecnoTelevisión University Contest.
The synopsis describes the work: "Viviana, a young woman with a great talent for singing, is repressed by her father Carlos, a pastor and founder of a Christian church, in a neighborhood located south of Bogotá. Carlos, determined that his daughter abandon singing and follow in his footsteps, forces her to go to church, where she has a vision that leads her to go in search of her dream of being a singer, but by accident she will discover a secret of her father with which she has to decide whether to stay or leave his life completely.
In conversation with TVyVideo+Radio, Edwin Alexander Gacha said that this short was the final work presented in the subject Project, which brings together different courses seen during the third semester, such as photography, script, among others, included in the Film program of the Central University. Production was carried out during the first half of 2018.
"The story is inspired by a friend who wants to be a singer but because of religion her family is opposed. In addition, because in my neighborhood there are more churches of different beliefs than schools and we wanted to highlight that façade of double standards that many of them have, "said the creator of the winning short.
In the creation of La Mesías, Andrea Garzón and Juan Camilo Salazar also participated, of whom he highlighted they were important in the production. For the script they had the advice of the teacher Yesid Vásquez. The music was created by Sebastián Valenzuela, a sixth semester classmate who in his free time is a skateboarder and hip-hop singer, the lyrics were composed by him and the bits of the song, he was inspired by the way people discriminate against him for his way of dressing and speaking.
The production took place in the Barrio Las Lomas of the 18th locality of Bogotá, where the story arises. For the recording, their relatives lent the houses, and although they belong to some of these churches, they agreed with the criticism raised in the video. People from the neighborhood also participated as extras.
Edwin Alexander Gacha recalled that the short was rejected by the University Festival, because the subject generated conflicts with which they did not want to enter. After having been the winner of the TecnoTelevisión University Contest, they have requested it for a trailer of the University offering the career.
Boost to quality production
The Academic Coordination of the Faculty was in charge of disseminating the information about the call for the TecnoTelevisión University Contest in its 2019 version. After confirming that they met the requirements, Edwin Alexander Gacha and his colleagues decided to participate. Knowing that they were finalists, they promoted voting among friends, family and the University.
"For the votes, we asked for the support of a Christian church where a cousin of the director attends, there we shared it and many of them supported us with their vote," he said.
He mentioned that although they do constant video production, with the equipment received they will improve the quality of the work they do. The first thing they have in mind is the production of a documentary in the town of Sumapaz, in order to reflect the reality that the area is experiencing.
They also want to produce content for social networks that feed the two websites they have been working on for more than a year based on black comedy short films, a production for which they did not have professional teams. Today they are better preparing the videos for their pages, taking care of the art, the script, among other details, which will make them a professional job without neglecting the focus on black humor that characterizes them.
The Central University has also selected the winning short film and the history of its creators to promote the undergraduate film in the coming semesters.
