5G will enable ultra-reliable low-latency communication

Latin America. 5G networks are being built with an architecture that will support the URLLC (Ultra Reliable and Low Latency Communication) service category. URLLC will support a number of advanced services for latency-sensitive connected devices to enable applications across a broad spectrum, such as factory automation, autonomous driving, industrial internet and smart grid.

This is explained by the summary of the study "New Services and applications with ultra-reliable communications and low latency with 5G", published in the Zero Gap portal of 5G Americas.

"Mobile networks and vertical industries are undergoing a major technological transformation aided by critical communication capabilities in terms of low latency and high reliability characteristics, especially in the healthcare, automotive, industrial automation, energy and entertainment sectors. As early commercial 5G deployments focus on enhanced mobile broadband use cases, the future is being prepared for use cases that boast ultra-high reliability and low latency features," said José Otero, Vice President of 5G Americas for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The study details the principles for achieving URLLC, explains the need for a new approach, and highlights the key requirements of URLLC services. It also details the upcoming use cases of URLLC in intelligent transport, industry automation, and telesurgery, and presents the latency and reliability requirements for these applications.
