The DVB project celebrated the Uruguay's decision to adopt dvb-t and DVB-H standards for the transmission of its fixed and mobile signals of digital terrestrial television (DTT). The decision was announced on August 27, through a presidential decree signed by President Tabaré Vázquez and the Minister of Industry, Jorge Lepra.
Undersecretary Martin Ponce of Leon stated that the adoption of DVB standards will allow Uruguay to participate actively in the process of technological development through investments and development of software and content.
The decision to adopt the Standards are given after one year of evaluation of DVB and American and Japanese alternatives, by the National Commission of Open Digital Terrestrial Television. The basis of criteria considered to determine the final decision Was:
- Support for digital and mobile television as well as HDTV.
- Interactivity.
- Diversity, availability and cost of equipment.
- Technical quality of the service.
- Spectrum efficiency.
- Strategies for inclusion digital.
- Technology development National.
- Industry development audiovisual.
The decision sets a precedent at a time when other Latin American countries are evaluating the current offer of digital television systems terrestrial. DvB standards (DVB-T, DVB-C, DVB-S, DVB-S2 and DVB-H) are the basis of various digital television services all over the world. DVB-T has already been implemented in more than 30 countries and adopted in more than 100. More than 170 million devices around the world already receive services based on DVB standards.
Leon Lev, President of the Unit Uruguay's Communications Services Regulator said: Timely adoption of the technical standard is a step initial to facilitate the development of terrestrial television digital, by allowing all players involved to understand the regulatory scheme that will be the basis for the transition to the digital television in Uruguay.
Uruguay becomes a pioneer in Latin America in combining the television selection fixed and mobile digital terrestrial (DVB-T and DVB-H), ensuring, by both, the efficient use of technology and the convergence of services. In addition, the decision to adopt DVB standards in Uruguay it is strongly supported by the European Commission and European industry in general.
