The European Broadcasting Union, EBU, is one of the largest professional associations for broadcasters in the world. It has 71 active members in 52 countries in Europe, North America and the Middle East; and 29 countries in the rest of the world. EBU was founded in February 1950 by broadcasters from Eastern Europe. In 1993 it merged with OIRT, its Western European counterpart.
The EBU works on behalf of its members in the European area and negotiates the broadcasting rights of major sporting events, operates the Eurovision and Euroradio networks, organizes program exchanges, stimulates and coordinates co-productions and provides a wide range of services, operational, commercial, technical, legal and strategic. As its main office is in Brussels, it represents the interests of broadcasters before the European institutions.
The EBU works together with sister institutions on other continents.
