It is interesting to see how the use of music libraries has increased in our countries. To find out what some of the users of this service think, we spoke with three representatives of some television channels that operate in Latin America: LAPTV, Canal Caracol and Sony Entertainment Television. Here they tell us what are the benefits of having an extensive musical collection available at hand for the work of audiovisual music.
Let's look at their assessments in this regard:
TV&V: What is the service of a music library?
Ernesto Schirmer - LAPTV: Basically you pay for the use of music already produced, instead of producing original music for each project.
Adriana Marmorek - Canal Caracol: A bookstore allows you to quickly and efficiently use the right music for a "promo" or commercial at a very reasonable cost.
TV&V: How does the licensing process operate?
Ernesto Schirmer – LAPTV: The music company offers, for an already established amount, the unlimited use of musical cuts in a library of compact discs for a certain period, either a year or more.
Adriana Marmorek - Canal Caracol: It's a very simple process. A payment method agreement is reached and NON-Stop sends the discs.
TV&V: What are the main advantages of using a music library?
Ernesto Schirmer – LAPTV: It's cheaper than producing original music, it's also more practical and efficient because you have the music you need at hand.
Adriana Marmorek - Canal Caracol: Excellence in music production, speed, alternatives, good price.
Francisco Oduber – Sony Entertainment Television: The main advantage of having a music library is immediacy, having music on hand that can solve a certain situation in a matter of minutes.
Variety: Generally, music libraries contain a large number of tracks in different styles that allow you to choose and even create pieces from a particular music.
Duration: In most cases, tracks come with durations that easily adapt to the daily work of promotions. The fact of having versions of 1 min, 30 secs, 15 secs, saves you time in editing and the result is superior.
Costs: Thanks to the fact that only an annual fee is paid for broadcasting rights, the costs are significantly reduced.
TV&V: Why not hire the services of musicians and studios specialized in the creation of soundtracks for a specific purpose?
Ernesto Schirmer – LAPTV: I don't see it as necessary unless it is a special project where an expense of that magnitude is justified. The quality and quantity of music you get with a music library is very good and they save you the work of getting and hiring high-caliber musicians.
Adriana Marmorek - Canal Caracol: Because the time available to make the promos is very short. For the costs involved in making a soundtrack for a specific commercial or promo. By the volume that is handled. (In the channel we handle about 400 monthly referrals.)
Francisco Oduber – Sony Entertainment Television: Currently it is quite expensive to use musicians and record in a studio, and although on many occasions it is necessary to use their services, having a good bookstore helps you to do without them a little. There are cases when recording original music is absolutely necessary but in our case, we usually reserve it for the most important projects in which a library, no matter how good, is insufficient.
