Latin America. The availability of radio spectrum is one of the main catalysts for the development of mobile services. Over the past few years, regulators in Latin America and the Caribbean have worked to bring larger portions of spectrum to the industry.
In the first half of the year, an average of 508 MHz had been delivered for IMT services below 6 GHz in the region, according to the Zero Gap section on radio spectrum allocated for mobile services in Latin America.
The research, where 18 Latin American markets are monitored monthly, shows that Brazil is where the largest amount of radio spectrum was delivered to the industry with 1,060 MHz. The podium at the regional level is completed by Uruguay (815 MHz) and Peru (739.2 MHz). However, more work is needed in the vast majority of countries, as 12 of them are below the regional average.
So far in 2023, the markets of Uruguay, Peru, Guatemala and El Salvador were the ones that delivered the largest portions of radio spectrum. It is expected that in the remainder of the year Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico will hold radio spectrum tenders to encourage the development of 5G services, so the regional average will increase.
