Peru. The Ministry of Transport and Communications, MTC, evaluates the best design for the rearrangement of the 3.5 GHz frequency band, the most important for the deployment of 5G, as well as for the competition of the aforementioned band that will allow operators to have more spectrum for the deployment of this technology.
Although 5G services have been provided in Peru, the objective is to promote its use by taking advantage of the radio spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band. At the beginning of 2022, 43 5G base stations had been deployed, and by the end of the third quarter of the same year, there were 641 stations in eight cities of the country (Lima and Callao, Ancash, Arequipa, Cusco, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque and Piura).
"It is a challenge for Peru to achieve the optimal reorganization of this band and carry out a competitive contest, in such a way that it allows the 5G service to achieve its takeoff and expansion for the benefit of the population," said the Deputy Minister of Communications, Patricia Carreño.
In this regard, the MTC official said that technical working meetings are being held with the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (OSIPTEL) and the Private Investment Promotion Agency (Proinversión), to collect their contributions in this design.
Likewise, the deputy minister highlighted the sector's effort to close the digital divide in 4G services, for which in the following months the 2.3 Ghz and AWS-3 bands will be contested.
"We are working focused on generating incentives for the development of telecommunications services with the aim of closing the digital divide, which, today, prevents more than 85% of population centers from having access to 4G mobile Internet," said Carreño.
These statements were made during his presentation at the forum: "Wireless Technology Summit 2023", organized by 5G Americas, whose main theme was "5G: What to expect from new technologies in Latin America and the Caribbean?".
