Latin America. According to a study by the Ibero-American Telecommunications Organization (OTI) during the third quarter of 2021, the telecommunications sector in the region registered revenues of 32,632 million dollars, which implies an increase of 6%.
Of these data provided by the OTI, it stands out that 55.3% correspond to the mobile segment, 28.1% to fixed telephony and broadband, and 16.5% to restricted television. In addition, it follows a generalized increase in all segments that make up the telecommunications sector, characterized by a 6.4% annual growth of the fixed market. Meanwhile, the mobile market increased by 5.9% and the Pay TV market by 5.8%.
OTI also assured that "this recovery and emergence of the long-term trajectory will depend on the transition to new service provision technologies, which will be impacted by the growing preference and consumption habits of digital tools and applications."
Additionally, in previous quarters the dynamics by segment were positive in all sectors. This evolution is attributed to a "partial economic recovery of the member countries of the region and the reactivation of activities in the different economic sectors."
Likewise, the study is worth noting that Brazil and Mexico have the main markets, since together they account for 42.4% of the revenues of the Ibero-American region. Followed by Spain, Argentina and Colombia, with a share of 14.5%, 7.6% and 7.4% respectively.
Meanwhile, the Chilean market also grew, occupying 5.4% due to a deep adoption of the various telecommunications services, while Peru reached 4.9%, as a result of the increase in the contracting and use of telecommunications in its territory.
In conclusion, it can be said that the rebound in the telecommunications industry is due to the recovery in economic activity. However, the OTI is cautious with these figures and assures that "a potential brake on the recovery of the long-term trend due to the differentiated impact of the pandemic in the countries of the region remains latent."
Finally, the OTI considers that the fixed and mobile segment of telecommunications have entered a phase of expansion, thanks to the marked growth of broadband connections, "as well as the transition towards the provision of more and better connectivity capacities in the different territories of the region". This organization believes that new technologies will reinforce the demand for the internet, "marking the preference and consumption habits of digital tools and applications, from a transition towards more connected populations and economies", a matter to be taken into account for the suppliers of these services and solutions.
