Peru. In the framework of World Radio Day, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, MTC, reaffirmed its commitment to continue working and promoting projects so that more Peruvians are communicated, not only with the Internet and television, but also with more legal radio stations that benefit the rural populations of the country.
This was stated by Virgilio Tito Chura, Deputy Minister of Communications, who assured that, during the year 2021, the General Directorate of Authorizations in Telecommunications within the framework of its competences authorized the operation of 339 broadcasting stations in different areas of Peru, in order to promote formalization and that citizens have immediate information, direct, inclusive and low cost.
The authorizations were given mainly in the regions of Apurímac (48 radio stations), Puno (32), Cusco (24), Huánuco (24), Junín (23), Pasco (18), Piura (18), Lima (17), Áncash (10), among others.
"Radio is still in force and, despite new technologies, in times of pandemic it continues to adapt. It has had and has a decisive role in the development of societies, as is the case of Peru, said Tito Chura, during a virtual conversation organized by Concort TV called "The radio we want".
This event brought together representatives and specialists from various institutions of the State and the private sector to evaluate the role of radio after almost two years of pandemic, as well as to examine the needs of educational, commercial and community radios.
From 2017 to 2021, there are currently 6099 radio stations in the country that operate legally and are distributed as follows: 5461 stations in FM band (frequency modulated), 572 stations in medium wave band (OM), 47 stations in Tropical Short Wave (OCT) and 19 in International Short Wave (OCI).
In this regard, the general director of the General Directorate of Authorizations in Telecommunications, Miguel Hilario, said that the number of authorized sound broadcasting stations compared to 2017 increased to 18%.
"The significant growth was registered mainly in the regions of Apurímac, Amazonas, Huánuco, Puno and Ayacucho, where the authorization of new radios reports the largest increase with 77%, 39%, 32%, 30% and 28% respectively, in the last four years," said the official.
