Latin America. During the 9 years it has been in the market, Mediastream has achieved an important positioning that has allowed it to work hand in hand with the main channels to develop their streaming and OTT platforms. TVyVideo+Radio spoke with Luis Ahumada, director and founder of the company, who told his vision of the sector.
"In Latin America things are being done quite seriously in OTT. An example is Win Sport in Colombia, a major business that works with the sale of online content. In addition, CDF, Globosat in Brazil are other good initiatives that are being done well, although a little slower compared to other regions."
On how to monetize OTT platforms, Luis Ahumada said that it depends a lot on the content, since users will pay for something worthwhile. That is why you should reflect on what people are really willing to pay and what they are not.
"Sports and live events are premium content and obviously people are willing to pay for it. That is proven with examples in the United States with the baseball league or the NBA, you have to replicate it in Latin America. But if it's a novel that's on the website and on Youtube, why would people pay for it?"
He added that a bet should be made on exclusive, interesting, strong content, play it so that people pay for them and it is not everywhere available and free.
To have an OTT platform you must have interesting content, but in Latin America there are channels that have little content that is not enough to sustain a platform alone, so they must join to make an interesting offer.
"What's happening is that many are waiting to make the decision at the best time and that best time is never going to come. That's why they should try it and try it. I have been working on digital projects for 20 years and I know that projects are not always going to be the same."
Mediastream is a company that was born in Chile, and today has a presence in the United States, Brazil and Colombia, experience with which they seek to expand in Mexico and Central America from their office in Miami and also want to be stronger in Peru.
One of the latest successful cases of Mediastream is Mega, a platform that occupies the first place in the Chilean market, surpassing in the number of visitors to Netflix. In addition, they are working with Caracol, and the football platform Poipes,
Finally, he pointed out that the company has had a good year and is on track to meet the goal of being number one in this type of services. "We help channels and content generators build their platform with an end-to-end service and with all the technical conditions we have. The results have been very good, we grow every year over 80%, we are supported by the Amerigo investment fund and with partners such as the company Elemental".
