Surround speakers are typically located two or three feet above ear level and should not be directed towards the mixing position. The purpose here is to achieve a dispersed sound field in a balanced way, without prominent defects. While the sourround speakers must be "in phase" with each other, their absolute polarity has no relevance to the front channels while the decoder introduces a time delay within the sourround channel.
The amplifiers used for the central and sourround channels must be similar to those used in the Left/Right channels. Note that only one amplifier is required to handle all sourround speakers. Similarly, it is appropriate to use serial-parallel cabling.
