New recording devices

New resources for professional audio recording include Shure's new lavalier microphones, and Audio-Technica's UHF wireless systems and shotgun microphones.

The FP24 is a portable two-channel mixer/preamplifier for professional use in field production. It is ideal for high-resolution digital recording with a dynamic range exceeding 110dB, a wide bandwidth extending between 10Hz and 50 kHz, and a number of exceptional behavioral features with low distortion signals.

Equipped with gains up to 66dB, balanced and transformed inputs (assignable to L-C-R outputs), integrated microphone, 1kHZ tone oscillator and amplifier for monitoring with headphones, the FP24 meets the demands required in film and television production. Premium transformers at the inputs offer quiet operation and complete freedom from RF interference, while the balanced output maintains signal integrity even when using long cable lengths.

The unit's high-pass filters operate at 6dB per octave with any of the 80 or 160 Hz frequency curves and are inserted before the other active elements of the circuit to expand the available space. It also has peak limiters with adjustable thresholds. The FP24 receives power internally from a pair of common AA batteries or externally from a DC power adapter (5-14Vdc) and its weight does not reach two pounds.

It is built inside an aluminum chassis with protective metal on the front panels that protect it in the rough work of field production. On the front panel it has sealed potentiometers that ensure a long life and precise gain adjustments. Display functions include two-color LED indicators that represent the cropping and limiting activities of each channel and seven-segment LED meters with three adjustable brightness levels, one of which can be viewed in direct sunlight conditions.

This FP24 unit is easily linked to shure's FP33 mixer via the new A33LK accessory cable kit, offering a highly versatile solution for 5x2 configurations in field production that can be used for stereo microphones, wired shotguns and a pair of lavalier microphones. All five microphone inputs receive 48-volt power phantom.

Shure WL50 Miniature Lavalier Microphones

Designed for theatre, broadcast and event production applications, the lavalier WL50 microphones are Shure's new sub-miniature omnidirectional microphones. Their weight is 0.34 grams with a diameter of 5.8 mm, so small that they virtually disappear when in use. Condensing units are available in black, beige and white colours.

All models have a frequency response ranging from 20 to 20,000 Hz and come with as standard accessories four equalization capsules that can be swapped as needed to ensure optimal clarity and sound in the various applications. It includes a pair of capsules for equalization in silver mesh that offer a slight stimulus of 4dB between 8 and 18 kHz, and two similar capsules in gold mesh that deliver a stimulus of 10dB at 12kHz.

Each WL50 microphone is offered with one of two finishing options: a braided cable (no connector) or a TA4F connector compatible with all Shure wireless transmitters. A magnetic mount, rotating flap clip, double tie clip and pin mount are accessories that are included with each model, as well as a pair of foam windbreaks. All models are sold separately as well as with Shure's UHF, UC, SC and LX wireless systems.

Audio-Technica U100 Wireless System

The U100 system consists of the ATW-U101 body-pack transmitter unit and the ATW-U102 connection receiver unit. This series has a UHF camera mount system and is available in two frequency ranges: the 656-668 Mhz range, which corresponds to the 45-47 television channels and the 728-740 Mhz frequency range, which corresponds to the 57-59 television channels, respectively. It presents the option of 100 PLL synthesized channels selectable by means of switches that are located in both the receiver and the transmitter. Its True Diversity operation chooses the best signal between two independent sections of the receiver, a feature that considerably reduces the appearance of drops in the signal. It is a robust, solid RF design system proven in high-demand commercial applications. Allows UHF band operation with high resistance to interference. Its flexibility in frequencies allows it to work in both analog production environments and DTV digital television.

Within its design features, it has a helical filter in the receiver that improves the rejection of unwanted signals. Using LED indicators on the receiver, you can set the antenna status at both position A and B, AF status and power status; It has a balanced audio output with level control and removable antennas that are installed by means of BNC connectors.

The receiver operates with two internal 9-volt batteries or 12V DC external power and level control for the headphone jack connector. The ATW-U101 transmitter features standard 5-pin Switchcraft microphone input connectors that can be used with Audio-Technica's AT831cT5, MT830cT5 and MT830cT5-TH microphones.

Audio-Technica Shotgun AT815ST and AT835ST Microphones

Designed for professional sound recording for video production and broadcasting, these models of shotgun stereo microphones from Audio-Technica are compact, lightweight and suitable for camera mounting. It features a configuration of independent cardioid line and condenser elements in the form of eight (8). It allows the selection for the handling of low frequencies, as well as the selection between the M-S matrixless mode and two left/right internal matrix modes. Includes 24" 5-pin XLRF cable to two standard 3-pin XLRM connectors. Its frequency response ranges from 30 to 20,000 Hz and it offers low frequency roll-off of 80Hz, 12dB per octave. It requires phantom power (Phantom Power) of 11-52V, typical 4 mA at 48 volts per channel. The impedance is 200 ohms. It includes as accessories a press for assembly, foam windbreaks and protective bag. The AT815St model measures 38 cms and weighs 142 grams. For its part, the AT835ST model offers a response to frequencies between 40 and 20,000 Hz, the only difference with respect to its performance, in addition to a length of approximately 23 cm and a weight that barely exceeds 100 grams.
