MPEG Cameras

Until relatively recently, camera models using MPEG2 encoding were still prototypes. Today these alternatives are part of the growing digital video market.

The MPEG2 compression system is already available in some models of home cameras manufactured by Hitachi and Sony. These camcorders offer features and functions ranging from capturing still images, through editing and titled options, to recording extensive audio files.

Hitachi DVD-RAM DZ-MV100

Within the new product line for video recording and playback, Hitachi offers DVD Camcorder, DVD Recorder and DVD Drives solutions for PC. For now we will deal only with the model DVD Camcorder DVD-RAM DZ-MV100 standard 4.7 GB.

The DZ-MV100 model calls a camera that records and stores audio and video information under the standard of the DVD Forum (Organization made up of more than 200 companies around the world). DVD is fast becoming an important storage medium as it provides a bridge between audio and video devices and personal computers. The recording format is MPEG2 for video and JPEG for still images. It can store up to 1998 still images of 1280x960.

This camera uses DVD-RAM discs of 8 cms with storage capacity of 1.46 GB on each side and has AV/PC compatibility (AudioVideo/PersonalComputer). The 8 cms format was established by the DVD Forum for combined AV/PC applications and allows random access, high read and write speeds, durability and reliability.

It also offers long-life storage, thanks to the fact that it does not make contact with the recording and playback medium. This format prevents the deterioration of the quality of the images even after repeated reproductions. In this type of cameras the problems of breaking or tangling of tapes do not occur. It allows the selection of recording modes with capacity of one hour in high quality, 30 minutes on each side at a fixed rate of 6 Mbps, and 2 hours in standard mode, that is, 60 minutes on each side at a fixed rate of 3 Mbps.

In this camcorder it is not necessary to advance or reverse the recording media to look for a particular image, any part of the recording can be played virtually instantly. It has navigation screens that allow quick selection and playback of specific recordings. The camera system does not allow it to be recorded on previously stored material. The camera searches for disk space for new information.

It has A/V, S-Video and Mic inputs and outputs and connection to a PC terminal through USB connectors. Manual and auto focus options, a 3.5" LCD monitor and shutter speeds between 1/60 and 1/4000.

The DZ-MV100 camcorder has a 1/4" CCD with reading effectiveness for video of 720 thousand pixels and for still images of 1 million. The lens has been designed for megapixel applications and has a 12X optical zoom that in digital mode reaches 48X. The resolution offered in pixels is 704x480 (High quality), 325x480 (Standard quality), 1280x960 (Still images) and 704x480 (DVD Video).

Sony MD DiscCam

The Sony DCM-M1 model has the ability to record to the 650MB Data2 MiniDisc support, MPEG2 encoded digital video in real time, similar to that used for DVD and ATRAC (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding) audio in the MD video format. ATRAC is an information compression system in MiniDisc that puts 74 minutes of digital audio on a 2.5-inch disc. It has a 1/4" CCD of 680 thousand pixels and in video it reaches 360 thousand.

It stores up to 20 minutes of digital recording in MD format that reaches a video quality, with respect to the quality offered by VHS, of 3 times more bandwidth in the color signal and a higher signal to noise S/N ratio. The recording times it offers are 10 minutes on SP, 13-20 minutes on VP and 20 minutes on LP. It also has the ability to store up to 4500 still images on a removable MD Data Disc 2 disk that can be transferred to a PC in 640x480 VGA JPEG format. It can also store up to 260 minutes of digital audio on an MD View disc using ATRAC encoding. It is worth mentioning that the camera allows to play and record MD audio.

The DCM-M1 features a java 2.0 personal interface that allows you to easily navigate through each menu of the camera system using a touch-sensitive display. It also offers non-linear editing options through which it is possible to reposition scenes in both playback and editing modes. It offers the functions move, copy, trim and erase. It allows precise access to a video segment that you want to watch immediately. It has 8 transition modes within which are the Wipe, Mosaic, Cross Dissolve and Fade modes.

It also offers drawing functions that allow you to add information to the images from the respective menu that includes a toolbox to make color, density or line changes and insert default images.

For the fast transfer of still and moving images from the camera to a PC, it has the connection of an Ethernet port that uses the computer's web browser as an interface.

Among its features and functions it also offers an optical zoom of 10X and in digital mode it reaches 40X, variable shutter speeds between 1/4 and 1/4000 of a second in AE mode (Auto Exposure), 3.5" LCD Monitor, stereo input for Mic microphone, white balance in 4 options and 7 programmed exposure modes. Video outputs and inputs are resolved by a special mini A/V connector.
