Latin America. The "switching on" of 5G networks started in the Caribbean during 2019 continues its progress and by 2022 there are already 9 commercial networks of this type, according to a survey of 5G Americas supported by information from governments, network operators and Telegeography.
Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago were among the countries where commercial 5G deployments were announced in late 2019. These three markets concentrate 7 networks in total. Two other 5G networks were deployed in the Dominican Republic between 2021 and 2022.
In the cases of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic, auctions of spectrum suitable for 5G distributed in a variety of bands have been held, highlighting the 3.5 Ghz.
Additionally, several regulators consider spectrum suitable for 5G in their management of this resource taking into account a wide variety of spectrum bands, including the "second digital dividend" (600 MHz) and millimeter wave bands (mmWave) above 24 GHz. Specifically, in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands the 600 MHz band is in use for mobile services.
In the Bahamas, the analysis of the 600 MHz, the "L Band", 2.5 GHz and the "C Band" (3.4 – 4.2 GHz) bands is mentioned, while in the countries that make up the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) the use of the 600 MHz bands for mobile services has been consulted, 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 Ghz.
